Starting next Tuesday, September 1, Maiquetía International Airport will partially resume operations after the damage caused by the double earthquake of June 24, restoring between 30% and 33% of international flights, according to Bitácora Económica.
Transport Minister Francisco Garcés said that before the emergency, Simón Bolívar Airport handled about 75% of international and domestic flights, a share that over the past two months had to be redistributed to the terminals in Valencia, Barcelona and Maracay to maintain the country's connectivity.
To facilitate the restart, authorities will set up temporary terminals in the airport's parking lots, a provisional area equivalent to several soccer fields, from which passengers will be bused to the runways while permanent repairs to the main infrastructure continue.
The minister also said the initial goal is to recover a little over 25% of capacity and then gradually scale up to full operational normalcy, after scrapping the previous opening date in favor of getting basic services and security mechanisms in the temporary facilities up to standard.
