Anne Carson wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that the Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Canadian poet Anne Carson, according to the newspapers La Tercera and BBC Mundo. The prestigious prize was granted for her daring and inventive work which, in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition, creates new forms for contemporary literature.

Carson, who for years had been listed among the leading candidates at betting sites, will receive a handmade diploma, a medal made of recycled gold and a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor. The formal award ceremony will be held in December, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

The recognition of Carson once again puts the spotlight on the representation of women among the highest honors in literature. Since the prize was created, women laureates have represented a small fraction compared with the men who have received the distinction. Although a greater alternation has recently been recorded, the historical imbalance in the cultural industries remains deep.

Following the announcements of the science and literature prizes, international attention now shifts to the Committee's upcoming releases. The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize is expected, while the Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel will be presented afterward.
