Burkina Faso inaugurates its first national gold refinery

Burkina Faso inaugurated its first gold refinery in the country, according to contrapunto.com, which reported it on September 29, 2026, through its Instagram account. The new industrial facility aims to transform the local raw material before it is exported.

According to the outlet's post, the plant is expected to have a capacity to process up to 164 tons of gold a year. The infrastructure marks a shift in how the African nation manages its mineral resources, which has historically exported its precious metals in raw form without prior processing.

Local refining allows producing countries to capture a larger share of the added value of their natural resources, reducing their dependence on external processing centers traditionally located in Europe or Asia. Projects of this type aim to retain greater economic benefits domestically and strengthen fiscal reserves.
