Maracaibo Chamber of Commerce calls for new model for electricity sector

A new management model for the National Electricity System was demanded by the Maracaibo Chamber of Commerce, according to the portal Banca y Negocios on Friday, September 25, 2026. The business association warned that the country remains mired in a severe electricity crisis, with daily outages of up to five hours or more and no advance notice.

The intermittent power supply directly paralyzes economic activity and affects Venezuelan households. Continuous failures in the infrastructure prevent normal operation of the commercial and industrial sectors, which slows the recovery of local production and erodes the population's quality of life.

To definitively resolve the crisis, the private institution said that a legal framework is needed to allow national and foreign private-sector participation in the related activities of the service, while generation remains under the central coordination of the state. The association stressed that there is no possibility of economic reactivation without a stable and reliable electricity system.

On the macroeconomic front, the International Monetary Fund projects real gross domestic product growth of 4.0% for the close of 2026, an estimate that is subject to stability and the timely supply of basic services in the national territory.
