China consolidates as Spain's top trade supplier

China strengthened its position for a third consecutive month in August as Spain's top trade supplier, displacing Germany in a structural shift that, according to Forbes España, based on data from the Ministry of Economy, reflects a sustained trend rather than a one-off reading. Between January and August, Spanish purchases from the Asian giant totaled 35,879 million euros, up 11.1% from the same period a year earlier, comfortably ahead of the 33,686 million euros recorded for Germany, which rose 2.5%.

This displacement of Spain's traditional European partners reflects China's deep integration into critical links of the global economy, particularly in high-technology sectors and components for the ecological transition. Spain's dependence is no longer limited to low-cost manufactured goods; it extends to technologies essential for industrial modernization, such as batteries, solar panels and electric vehicles.

Cumulative figures show that the trade gap continues to widen. In August alone, imports from China rose 18.9% to 4,430 million euros, compared with 3,265 million euros in purchases from Germany. The weak performance of Spanish sales to China, which in the first eight months rose just 0.7% to 5,383 million euros against the sharp increase in imports, deepens a persistent bilateral imbalance.

The result of this dynamic is a bilateral trade deficit that reached 30,496 million euros between January and August, 13% higher than the previous year. With Germany, by contrast, the negative balance narrowed 5.6% to 6,571 million euros, which makes China the source of 66.5% of Spain's total trade deficit, which stood at 45,818 million euros over the period.
