Colombian government clarifies that Venezuelan migrants with PPT will not face deportation

The Colombian government clarified that Venezuelan migrants who hold the Temporary Protection Permit (PPT) will not be deported, according to the newspaper TalCual, which reported on August 25, 2026. The measure seeks to provide certainty to a population that has formally integrated into the economy of the host country in recent years.

Colombia's Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Lara, said that Venezuelan citizens who received this protection regime and have found productive employment should not be considered migrants in irregular status. This legal status provides access to social security, formal banking and the labor market on equal terms.

The Temporary Protection Permit functions as an extraordinary regularization mechanism designed to absorb regional migration flows and turn informality into tax and labor formality. For workers and families, this document represents the difference between the precariousness of living undocumented and the legal stability needed to rent housing, pay social security contributions and plan for the future.

The government's decision dispels fears of abrupt changes in Colombian migration policy and establishes a principle of continuity for the economic integration of the Venezuelan community settled in its neighboring country.
