Colombia negotiates return of Mazda car assembly and weighs Toyota projects

The Colombian government confirmed that it is holding talks with Japanese automaker Toyota and working to bring Mazda back to assembling vehicles in the country, according to the portal Valora Analitik. The efforts are part of an agenda aimed at exploring investments in manufacturing and sustainable mobility, although these are ongoing talks and preliminary plans that, for now, do not amount to signed agreements or confirmed investments.

Reopening or establishing assembly plants is a complex challenge in global markets, where mass-production scale and logistics costs set the pace of the sector. Nevertheless, attracting this type of industry can boost the economy by creating skilled jobs in assembly plants, fostering a chain of local auto parts suppliers and strengthening technical capabilities within the national territory.

The closest precedent for this industrial activity dates to Mazda's long-standing presence, when it assembled vehicles in Colombia for three decades through Compañía Colombiana Automotriz at its plant in Bogotá. That production era ended definitively when the last vehicle left the assembly line on April 30, 2014, marking the close of a cycle for traditional automotive manufacturing in the capital.

In recent contacts with executives of Japanese companies such as Toshiba, Toyota and Mazda, the national executive also raised the possibility of expanding Toyota's participation through the development of charging infrastructure, the integration of local suppliers and the assembly of hybrid and electric vehicles. These talks also intersect with efforts to unblock the Economic Partnership Agreement between Colombia and Japan, a trade treaty whose negotiations have been stalled for some fifteen years.
