Colombia and Costa Rica tighten cooperation against narcoterrorism

Colombia and Costa Rica will take a step forward in an all-out fight against transnational crime and narcoterrorism, Costa Rican President Laura Fernández said on Tuesday.

The president made these remarks while appearing alongside Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella after a bilateral meeting held in the northern city of Barranquilla. Both nations seek to coordinate efforts to block the transit routes of illicit goods operating in the region.

During the meeting, officials said they are jointly developing a regional security vision aimed at strengthening the Escudo de las Américas. The initiative is an informal alliance oriented toward combating drug trafficking and is led by the United States.

Cooperation between the two governments seeks to consolidate bilateral mechanisms for exchanging information on border security. Going forward, it will be necessary to watch the development of the operational protocols that emerge from this new phase of diplomatic and police coordination in northern South America.
