Dinorah Figuera, head of the opposition delegation in the dialogue with chavismo, is pushing for Venezuela's next presidential election to be held in 2027, saying the electoral system's machinery must be dismantled and conditions of credibility guaranteed, according to the portal Contrapunto, which reported it on October 21, 2026.
The opposition leader said her team is receiving technical advice on the voter registry, an area where they have observed various irregularities. Given this situation, the opposition's priority is to clean up the system's databases and reform the magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).
The current negotiating process, focused on political and civil guarantees, has run into obstacles because of the government's reluctance to give ground on certain points. While the ruling party demands the lifting of international sanctions, opposition spokespeople say those measures are beyond their power to implement.
Under the agreements foreseen at the negotiating table, the appointment of the new TSJ magistrates should be finalized by December at the latest. The talks also contemplate reviewing the situation of other key state institutions over the coming year.
