Donald Trump calls a contest between Delcy Rodríguez and María Corina Machado interesting

U.S. President Donald Trump called the possibility that Delcy Rodríguez and María Corina Machado face each other in a future presidential election in Venezuela interesting, according to the portal AlbertoNews.

The U.S. president's remark came on Monday during a brief answer to a reporter's question about whether he would like to see the two leaders compete for the Venezuelan presidency. Trump did not elaborate on a possible candidacy by Rodríguez and did not express support for either of the two figures mentioned.

The comment comes at a time when political debate in Venezuela is focused on demands for an electoral timetable and on the conditions needed for the next elections. Sectors of the opposition have intensified their calls for setting dates and institutional guarantees ahead of a new process.

Washington's remarks add to recurring discussions about the political future of the South American country and expectations about opening spaces for electoral participation in the coming years.
