Two Venezuelan airports attract interest for private investment

Two of Venezuela's main airports have the economic fundamentals to attract private operators, according to the portal Banca y Negocios, which reported on October 1, 2026. The terminals at Maiquetía and on Margarita Island could receive capital from private regional or international investors, according to statements by Rafael Echevarne, director general for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Airports Council International.

The entry of private operators into airport infrastructure typically responds to governments' lack of sufficient resources to sustain the necessary investments, a model that has hundreds of precedents in the region. To carry these projects forward in the country, the executive stressed that it is essential to establish a legal framework that guarantees legal certainty for foreign and domestic investors.

This shift toward private participation in strategic sectors is taking place against a backdrop of persistent regulatory challenges. In this regard, the newspaper Crónica Uno reported that tax gaps in the current regulatory frameworks continue to threaten the profitability of private partnerships and hold back new investment in the country.

The recovery of the air terminals takes on additional importance after the damage to infrastructure caused by the earthquakes that occurred in mid-year, a process that is currently receiving international technical support to restore normal air traffic in Venezuela.
