US expects Delcy Rodríguez to declare presidency vacant

The US government backs a roadmap for Venezuela's political transition that calls for renewing the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) and the National Electoral Council (CNE) as steps preceding a declaration of absolute absence in the presidency, according to AlbertoNews on October 26, 2026.
A senior State Department official said in a conference call with reporters that Washington expects the formation of new judicial and electoral authorities to move forward first. Once the new TSJ is constituted at the end of the year and the CNE shortly afterward, Rodríguez should declare a permanent vacancy in the office.
Under Venezuela's legal framework, a declaration of absolute absence would trigger a six-month period for organizing and holding new presidential elections. This sequence partially coincides with the timeline proposed by Dinorah Figuera on behalf of the National Assembly elected in 2015.
US administration officials said they will use their influence over the interim authorities to ensure that the process ends in elections recognized by all parties. The proposal seeks to lay institutional groundwork following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January 2026.
