US lifts sanctions on Jorge Rodríguez as negotiating incentive, Capriles says

The lifting of US sanctions on Venezuela's National Assembly president, Jorge Rodríguez, aims to offer guarantees and incentives in the negotiation process with the opposition, opposition lawmaker Henrique Capriles said, according to a report by Infobae on October 14, 2026. The measure, announced by the US Treasury Department, removes the chavista leader and brother of acting president Delcy Rodríguez from the sanctions list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The dialogue process is part of the transition plan set out by Washington after the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January. Since then, the administration of President Donald Trump has restored diplomatic relations with Caracas and pursued bilateral agreements, including an oil deal reached in August to access a portion of the South American country's crude reserves.

Despite the easing of individual and sectoral restrictions aimed at resource exploitation, the OFAC list maintains punitive measures against key figures in the ruling camp, such as Interior Relations Minister Diosdado Cabello and former attorney general Tarek Saab. Restrictions on strategic state-owned companies such as Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the airline Conviasa and the Central Bank of Venezuela also remain in force.
