56% of citizens expect to need bank financing

56% of citizens expect they will need bank financing in the next six months, according to the newspaper Descifrado, which reported on October 2, 2026. The forecast, shared by Pedro Pacheco, president of the Venezuelan Banking Association, reflects persistent inflation and the resulting loss of purchasing power among families.

Access to credit is a key tool that allows households to smooth their consumption in the face of price shocks. When money loses value rapidly, real wages contract and families turn to borrowing to cover current expenses or basic goods. However, in high-inflation environments, the supply of loans tends to shrink because of the loss of value of the local currency and liquidity constraints in the financial system.

The pressure on household budgets coincides with a steady depreciation of the bolívar. According to data published by the portal Bitácora Económica, the official exchange rate rose 7.6% at the close of September 2026, reaching 859.06 bolívares per dollar. This increase is part of a broader trend: so far in 2026, the price of the U.S. dollar has accumulated a rise of 185.05%. Likewise, the euro's exchange rate rose 5.04% during the same month.

Venezuela's inflation picture has shown great volatility in recent years. According to data from the International Monetary Fund, annual inflation stood at 337.5% in 2023, fell to 49.4% in 2024, and rebounded to 252.0% in 2025. For the close of 2026, the multilateral agency's projections estimate annual inflation of 387.4%, while for 2027 a slowdown is projected that would bring the indicator to 94.4%.

Looking ahead, the evolution of household consumption will depend on the banking sector's capacity to channel resources to the private sector and on the effectiveness of measures to stabilize the foreign exchange market.
