75% of businesses in La Guaira are now open

La Guaira state governor José Alejandro Terán said on September 26, 2026, that 75% of businesses in the state are operating, according to the newspaper Descifrado. The official said that reopenings have begun even in the so-called ground zero of the tragedy, mainly pharmacies and food shops. However, the official statement does not specify the absolute number of businesses this proportion represents, nor the period or reference year used to measure the reactivation.
Commercial reactivation in areas hit by disasters often faces serious structural constraints. Although reopening doors is a first step toward normalization, the sustainability of these businesses depends directly on the recovery of the local economy and the rebuilding of basic infrastructure. It is worth noting that official sources did not specify which particular disaster they were referring to when they spoke of the tragedy in the commercial region.
Alongside reopening efforts, merchants and consumers face severe pressure on their budgets. As an illustrative example of the strain on the basic food basket, and not as a general indicator of commercial inflation, the newspaper Crónica Uno reported that the price of a carton of 24 eggs rose by more than 86% in bolívares between July and September 2026.
This same pressure is reflected when analyzing prices in foreign currency, an indicator of distribution costs and of the exchange-rate gap. Over the same two-month period, the cost of a carton of eggs in dollars rose by more than 51%, according to data published by Crónica Uno. This rise in the price of essential foods illustrates the difficulties households face in covering their minimum needs.
Going forward, the question is whether the reopening of commercial premises will translate into a steady flow of transactions, or whether it will remain merely an operational reopening without the backing of mass consumption.
