Food consumption in Venezuela rose 22% during the first months of 2026, according to the portal Banca y Negocios, citing remarks by acting President Delcy Rodríguez. According to the report, the official said that 90% of food sold in the country is domestically produced and attributed this performance to a 78% recovery in the agro-industrial sector.
In Venezuela's economic dynamics, the supply of agricultural and processed products depends on the availability of inputs and the capacity of commercial distribution. Government authorities explained that the increase in consumption reflects the strengthening of the productive apparatus through fiscal and financial policies. However, the official announcement did not clarify whether the 22% figure was calculated on the physical volume of food purchased or whether it corresponds to a nominal increase in total spending.
For its part, the portal Descifrado reported that this trend is occurring in an environment of intense pressure on prices, with cumulative inflation exceeding 225% so far this year. At the macroeconomic level, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recorded annual inflation for Venezuela of 337.5% in 2023, 49.4% in 2024 and 252.0% in 2025. For 2026, the IMF projects inflation of 387.4%, stressing that this is an estimate and not a verified figure, while for 2027 it anticipates an acceleration of price levels to 94.4%.
The rise in spending on food directly affects Venezuelan families, who must allocate a majority share of their monthly budget to covering the basic food basket. Going forward, the performance of supply and the effectiveness of financial measures will determine the sustainability of consumption in the domestic market.
