IMF to open Caracas office in first half of 2027

The International Monetary Fund will open a permanent office in Caracas during the first half of 2027, according to the daily El Nacional. The decision was confirmed by the organization's managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, following a meeting in New York with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez.

The establishment of a physical presence of the multilateral body in the country marks a significant shift in the technical and financial relationship between Caracas and international financial institutions, after years of estrangement and the suspension of regular economic surveillance missions.

The move comes amid a resumption of dialogue and cooperation channels with various global actors, a process that seeks to redefine technical assistance on statistics and macroeconomic policy for the South American country.

For citizens, the direct presence of the body opens a more constant channel for monitoring public accounts, the evolution of inflation and exchange-rate stability, factors that directly affect purchasing power and the cost of everyday life.

In the coming months, it will be necessary to watch the specific terms of the operational agreement and the scope of the functions the fund's staff will perform on Venezuelan territory.
