IMF to open Caracas office in first half of 2027

The International Monetary Fund will open a permanent office in Caracas during the first half of 2027, according to a report by the daily El Nacional, following a meeting in New York between the organization's managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, and Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.

The return of a formal representation of the multilateral body to Venezuelan territory comes amid a process of institutional and financial rapprochement, marked by Rodríguez's participation in the United Nations General Assembly. According to the international outlet Euronews, the interim head of state also held a private meeting in New York with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss energy, mining and bilateral security.

The opening of an office of this kind allows for the permanent restoration of technical oversight, economic assistance and direct monitoring of the country's macroeconomic variables, a mechanism the organization deploys in countries under adjustment or financial restructuring programs.

This channel of cooperation seeks to stabilize domestic economic indicators after years of isolation from major international financial centers and deep exchange-rate and fiscal distortions that eroded the purchasing power of the population.
