Diesel prices climb for a tenth straight session, surpassing levels from before the tax discount

According to heraldo.es, on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, diesel prices extended their rise to a tenth consecutive session and now exceed the cost they had before the 20-cent-per-liter tax discount was applied. Data from the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico show that diesel sold for 1.881 euros per liter this Tuesday, 4% more than a week ago and 1.6% more than on August 31.

Fuel taxes and state subsidies serve as tools to cushion the impact of energy price volatility on logistics costs and on consumers' wallets. When fuel prices rise steadily, the entire freight transport chain becomes more expensive, which feeds directly into the final price of basic consumer goods.

Motor diesel has benefited from a 20-cent-per-liter reduction in the hydrocarbons tax since September 1, double the 10-cent reduction applied in August, after this fuel rose 15.7% in July. However, inflation data for August published this Tuesday showed diesel prices up 30.3% and gasoline up 16.9%. In light of this situation, the Confederación Española de Transporte de Mercancías (CETM) has demanded urgent measures.

In this context, filling a 55-liter tank cost the average consumer 103.45 euros this Tuesday, 3.95 euros more than a week earlier. A gasoline tank cost 104.45 euros, 3.52 euros more than seven days earlier, after the price reached 1.899 euros per liter, up 3.5% from a week earlier and 11.4% from a month earlier.

Meanwhile, according to OilPrice, international fuel inventories also point to tensions in the global market, with recent declines in gasoline and diesel stocks that could affect international energy trade.
