US reactivates Marine security detachment at its embassy in Caracas

The United States has reactivated the Marine Corps Security Detachment at its embassy in Caracas, according to the portal Banca y Negocios, on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The move formalizes the standard global protection protocol for U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel in the country.

The step follows the reopening of the diplomatic mission in March, after seven years of interruption and as part of the restoration of bilateral ties. That political shift came after Nicolás Maduro left power in January through a foreign military intervention, opening a new phase in diplomatic relations under the interim administration of Delcy Rodríguez.

The deployment of Marines adds to a growing U.S. military presence in Venezuela over the course of the year. That presence has included evacuation drills in May and humanitarian aid missions coordinated by U.S. Southern Command after the earthquakes in June.

With this reactivation, the diplomatic mission consolidates its permanent security framework under the international standards set for U.S. embassies around the world.
