Additional Italian exports to Mercosur could exceed current estimates, trade agency says

According to Folha de S.Paulo, the initial estimate of 14 billion euros in additional revenue from Italian exports to the South American bloc over the next ten years could be below its actual potential. The assessment was made by Matteo Zoppas, president of ICE, the Italian foreign trade agency, in remarks reported by the newspaper in September 2026.

The projected increase in trade depends fundamentally on reducing the administrative obstacles that slow the flow of goods between the two regions. When bureaucratic hurdles diminish, logistics costs fall and companies find greater incentives to place their products in new markets.

For the productive sector and local consumers, greater trade openness translates into a more diversified supply of industrial and technological goods from Europe. This energizes domestic competition and facilitates the integration of regional value chains with international market standards.

Going forward, analysts and economic operators will need to watch the progress of regulatory negotiations and the effectiveness of measures aimed at unblocking bilateral trade. Achieving these goals will depend on the institutional agility with which both parties implement the trade agreements currently in force.
