Relatives of political prisoners, former detainees and representatives of human rights organizations met on Tuesday with opposition leader María Corina Machado to present complaints about alleged cases of torture, persecution and conditions of detention in Venezuela.
According to information disseminated by DDHH Vente Venezuela and picked up by the outlet, more than 100 relatives, organizations and victims of repression took part in the meeting, sharing testimony about the physical and emotional consequences of the arrests. One of the main concerns raised during the meeting was the health of political prisoners, especially people with cancer and autoimmune diseases who require specialized medical care.
Members of the Baduel family also denounced the physical after-effects that several detainees allegedly suffered as a result of alleged acts of torture. In their remarks, they referred to conditions of detention in penitentiary centers such as Rodeo I and Fuerte Guaicaipuro, noting that some detainees require urgent surgical procedures because of injuries sustained during their captivity.
The meeting highlights the persistence of complaints about violations of the fundamental rights of political prisoners in the country, an issue that keeps national and international humanitarian organizations on alert given the difficulties in guaranteeing access to adequate medical care in penitentiary centers.
