France sees violent protests leave one dead and nearly 1,800 detained

A day of protests against the high cost of living and the deterioration of public services left one protester dead and more than 500 police officers injured in France. The demonstrations, which began largely peacefully, escalated into clashes with security forces, damage to public buildings, looted shops and burned vehicles in several cities across the country.

According to BBC Mundo's coverage, authorities made some 1,800 arrests nationwide during Saturday's protests. The fatality suffered a cardiac arrest in Paris, the city that accounted for 855 arrests amid demonstrations that drew more than half a million people, reflecting growing social discontent over the economic situation.

The social unrest is rooted in an inflation surge in the European country. According to France 24, annual inflation in France reached 3.1% in September, driven by an increase of more than 21% in energy prices and 36.2% in petroleum products. This pressure on household budgets has been compounded by the energy crisis linked to blockades in the Strait of Hormuz.

The initial protests, centered last month on school conditions and the shortage of teachers in working-class neighborhoods, expanded to denounce inequality, cuts in public spending and the rising cost of living. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu blamed the riots on far-left groups and criminals, while President Emmanuel Macron was scheduled to address the nation.
