Henrique Capriles demands presidential elections in Venezuela

National Assembly lawmaker Henrique Capriles said that a permanent vacancy in the presidency had arisen in Venezuela after the capture of Nicolás Maduro, and therefore argued that presidential elections should be called in accordance with the Constitution, according to the portal AlbertoNews, which reported on October 21, 2026.

During an interview with the Onda network of Unión Radio, the political leader said that holding new elections need not hold back efforts aimed at the country's economic and social recovery, and argued that both processes can move forward simultaneously. He also questioned internal disputes within the opposition over posts and resources, and argued that institutional reconstruction requires removing those responsible for the crisis.

The proposal comes amid debate over Venezuela's political and institutional future following Maduro's capture and demands from various sectors for an electoral timetable. Capriles also reiterated that María Corina Machado has the greatest popular support and considered her presence in the country essential to act as a counterweight to power.
