John Barrett visits gold processing plants in El Callao

The chargé d'affaires of the United States in Venezuela, John Barrett, visited a gold processing plant and several mines in the El Callao area of Bolívar state. During the tour, Barrett was accompanied by Mining Minister Héctor Silva.

The visit to the Guayana region comes at a time when the gold and mining sector represents one of the main sources of non-oil revenue for the Venezuelan state and a focus of geopolitical and commercial interest in the Caribbean and South America. The municipality of El Callao accounts for much of the artisanal and industrial gold extraction in southern the country.

Mining activity in this area of Bolívar state operates under strict regulatory frameworks, controlled by mixed companies and the Ministry of Ecological Mining Development, with the aim of channeling production toward the international reserves of the Banco Central de Venezuela. The presence of foreign diplomats in strategic extraction zones is often linked to the assessment of commercial operations and conditions in the local industry.
