JPMorgan weighs launching its own stablecoin amid broad banking shift

According to The Wall Street Journal, as reported by the specialist outlet Blockhead, JPMorgan Chase has held preliminary internal discussions to evaluate launching its own stablecoin, a digital asset designed to maintain parity with the dollar and circulate freely on blockchain networks. The talks are at an early stage, and a bank spokesperson said the institution has no current plans to issue such an instrument, subject to the evolution of customer demand and the regulatory framework.

This internal exploration comes alongside other initiatives across the banking sector. Recently, a group of more than a dozen large institutions, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Santander, advanced the design of a stablecoin project aimed at commercial clients in Group of Seven currencies. Adding to this is the announcement of the BankChain Alliance by thousands of smaller institutions grouped in state bankers associations, with the goal of building a collaborative network based on distributed ledgers for tokenized deposits and automated settlements.

The current interest contrasts with the stance held by JPMorgan chief executive Jamie Dimon, who last year questioned the usefulness of these assets beyond traditional payments and criticized the payment of yields by issuers not subject to the regulation that applies to banks. Nonetheless, competitive pressures in the market have intensified with the entry of technology and payments companies that operate outside the traditional requirements for deposit-taking.

The stablecoin market has shown significant growth, reaching a considerable total volume in the sector during the year. According to data analyzed by Blockhead, estimates of the impact on the traditional payments sector point to a significant reduction in the market value of publicly traded companies in the industry.
