Keisha Lance Bottoms wins Georgia governorship, making history

Keisha Lance Bottoms has become the first Black woman to serve as governor in U.S. history by winning the state elections in Georgia. Her victory over conservative candidate Rick Jackson, who invested $100 million of his own wealth in the campaign, also marks the return of the state's executive branch to Democrats for the first time since 1998, ending 28 years of uninterrupted Republican control.

The election in this southern state reflects a profound demographic and political transformation. Georgia has moved from a traditional conservative stronghold to establish itself as a swing state on the federal electoral map, a trend reinforced by the simultaneous re-election of Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the same midterm elections.

The governor-elect's career includes her tenure as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022, where she managed the pandemic and civil rights protests, as well as her subsequent work as senior adviser and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement under the Joe Biden administration from 2022 to 2023.

On policy, Lance Bottoms' campaign has prioritized cost-of-living relief measures, including a pledge to expand the Medicaid program, the elimination of the sales tax on basic groceries, and a moratorium on the construction of new data centers in the state, a key sector for regional economic growth.
