Sustainable aviation will require $3.2 million, ICAO says

On October 28, 2026, the International Civil Aviation Organization proposed economic reforms to attract investment in sustainable fuels and energy infrastructure. The plan aims to help Latin America and the Caribbean capitalize on their productive potential without falling behind in the global energy transition.

Reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 will require multibillion-dollar investments, new infrastructure and sustainable fuels across the region. However, the $3.2 million figure disclosed by the source appears paltry for an industry of continental scale, which reflects the difficulty of measuring the true cost of transforming the sector.

Meanwhile, pressure on the operating costs of transport has been compounded by the macroeconomic environment. According to a report by the Latin American Energy Organization, reported by MercoPress, annual energy inflation in Latin America and the Caribbean accelerated in August to 8.33%, its highest level in the past twelve months.

The trend continued into September and October, when the price of diesel equaled that of gasoline for the first time, raising logistics costs and directly affecting the competitiveness of the transport and freight sector across the region's markets.
