Spain's economy grew 2.7% in the third quarter of 2026 from a year earlier, driven mainly by household consumption, although job creation shows signs of slowing, according to the outlet NoticiasTrabajo, which reported on Friday, October 30, 2026.
Quarter on quarter, gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.6%, one tenth of a point less than in each of the two previous quarters. This economic growth rests fundamentally on domestic demand, which contributed 2.6 percentage points to the year-on-year increase, while the contribution of the external sector was practically nil.
Meanwhile, hiring at companies slowed, and full-time equivalent jobs rose 1.6% year on year, seven tenths of a point less than in the previous period, according to the data released. This labor slowdown is also reflected in effective hours worked, which rose 2.2%, compared with 2.8% previously.
In the international and European context, the picture shows notable contrasts. According to the daily La Vanguardia, the French economy contracted 0.1% between July and September, underscoring the difficulties facing the euro zone. Also, in the area of public employment, El País noted that government administrations played a significant role in the addition of new jobs over the past year after an earlier decline.
