The Central Bank of Venezuela reported that cumulative inflation between January and August 2026 stood at 200.11%, according to information published by the outlet Bitácora Económica. The monthly indicator closed August at 8.9%, showing a slowdown from the 19.9% recorded in July.
This consumer price index measures the overall change in the prices of goods and services in the economy. A lower monthly rate indicates that prices rose at a slower pace than in the previous month, driven, according to the institution, by a smaller movement in the official exchange rate.
Separately, the outlet El Nacional reported that the food basket for a family of five required $728 in July, reflecting the persistent pressure on household purchasing power in a context of severe inflation. In addition, the official reference exchange rate of the Central Bank of Venezuela was set at 807.39 bolívares per dollar for September 4, 2026.
These price dynamics directly affect workers' income, as wages tend to lose purchasing power relative to the cost of food and basic services. The coexistence of official figures and parallel markets keeps the challenge of accurately measuring the real cost of living in question.
Financial authorities and multilateral organizations are evaluating the trend in these indicators while monitoring the behavior of the exchange rate and its impact on price stability in the coming months.
