Moderate or severe food insecurity falls to 21.1% in Colombia

Moderate or severe food insecurity in Colombia fell from 25.5% to 21.1% between 2024 and 2025, according to El País América Colombia, citing data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The reduction reflects progress in social protection, although the rate of severe food insecurity stood at 3.4%, compared with 5% previously, according to the same outlet. To definitively overcome the problem, the FAO says a country exits that map when undernourishment is below 2.5%.

The current economic context adds pressure on families because of inflation. According to El País América Colombia, food costs 6.74% more than a year ago, with increases of 78% for potatoes and 14.22% for beef, figures that weigh most heavily on informal workers and those earning low wages.

Territorial gaps continue to define the country's situation. Rural affectation reaches 31.4%, while in urban areas it stands at 18.1%, with deep disparities in departments such as Chocó at 56.8%, Sucre at 50.1% and La Guajira at 47.8%, according to the information published by the outlet.
