UN extends human rights mission on Venezuela for two years

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) approved the two-year renewal of the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela, according to the outlet AlbertoNews. The decision also extends the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in the country.

The resolution won 25 votes in favor, 17 abstentions and five votes against, according to the information published by the digital outlet. The negative votes came from China, Cuba, Vietnam, Egypt and Burundi, while the draft was presented by Chile and backed by several countries in the region.

Created in 2019, the mission aims to investigate serious human rights violations, such as arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances and torture. During the session, the Chilean delegation said that, despite some recent changes such as the release of detained people, the structures and mechanisms of repression remain active in the country.

For its part, the Venezuelan representation rejected the continuation of the mechanism and argued that these are extraordinary procedures that should not be perpetuated without the consent of the state. The delegation maintained that the country must move beyond instances of external scrutiny.

The extension of these international observation mechanisms keeps attention focused on Venezuela's political and legal situation, a key factor in monitoring democratic guarantees and citizens' access to justice.
