Foreign-currency deposits at Venezuelan banks fall in August

Foreign-currency deposits at Venezuelan banks fell for a second consecutive month in August, down 10.44%, according to the outlet Noticias sobre economía de Venezuela y el mundo on its Instagram account.

Deposits stood at 2.06 trillion bolívares in the eighth month of 2026. As a result, they fell from 46.9% of total deposits in July to 39.9% in August.

This trend contrasts with June, when foreign-currency deposits rose to 52.19% of total deposits. That increase reflected greater inflows of foreign currency and the spread of free-convertibility accounts, especially among individual account holders.

However, foreign-currency inflows have slowed, and opportunities to buy foreign currency at banks have narrowed, while bolívar liquidity has risen steadily, which explains the recovery in deposits held in the local currency.

Since the June surge, foreign-currency deposits have fallen 21.67% through the end of August, according to the Banking Report of the consultancy Aristimuño Herrera & Asociados, cited by the outlet.

Measured in US dollars, deposits amounted to $2,588.05 million, a monthly contraction of 15.9%. Despite this monthly decline, these deposits have grown 59.46% in real terms over the eight months reported for 2026, according to the data released.
