Evangelical leaders warn of weak Republican turnout

As CNN reported on October 13, 2026, conservative and religious leaders are warning about the need to mobilize white evangelicals ahead of the midterm elections, amid fears that low turnout could hand Democrats victories and jeopardize control of Congress in the U.S.
White evangelical turnout is a decisive factor for the Republican Party in key contests across the country. According to data from the Public Religion Research Institute cited by the outlet, this group makes up 13% of the country's population but, because of its high mobilization, often accounts for about 20% of the electorate in any given election.
The electoral backdrop is shaped by concern over the economy and high gasoline and food prices, which is fueling a mood of greater apathy. According to CNN's coverage, white evangelicals made up 38% of voters for President Donald Trump and formed his most solid coalition in the 2016, 2020 and 2024 elections.
Given this outlook, organizations such as the Faith and Freedom Coalition have launched initiatives aimed at occasional voters to encourage them to go to the polls. Meanwhile, pastors and religious leaders have begun urging their congregations to get involved in the midterm elections.
