Democrats win Kansas Senate seat for first time since 1932

Democrat Adam Hamilton was elected Tuesday as senator for Kansas, according to projections by US media outlets reported by Clarín, marking a milestone in a state that had not elected a representative of that party since 1932.

The result in the midterm elections represents a political challenge for President Donald Trump, who had previously won the region by wide margins in his campaigns and had recently traveled to back the outgoing Republican candidate, Roger Marshall, according to press reports.

On the financial front, election day triggered movements in international markets. According to MercoPress, the US dollar weakened against major currencies and gold rose more than 2%, trading above $4,000 an ounce, as investors assessed the impact of a possible split in Congress.

Elsewhere, El Nacional reported that other key seats for the legislative balance were contested across the country, including the victory of Republican Ashley Moody in Florida and the Democrats' retention of their seat in Georgia, setting up a new balance of power for the final two years of the current administration.
