Dollars held outside Argentina's financial system top $268 billion

Dollars and deposits that Argentines keep outside the formal financial system reached $268,824 million in the second quarter of 2026, according to Eleconomista, citing data from INDEC. The amount represents an increase of $14,453 million, or 5.7%, compared with $254,371 million recorded in the same period of the previous year.

This hoarding of banknotes and deposits, popularly known as the dólar colchón, or "mattress dollar," is part of a larger volume of foreign assets held by private parties. Adding financial investments, securities and other placements, the total wealth accumulated by Argentines abroad or outside the local system reaches $516,936 million, according to Eleconomista's coverage.

The accumulation of foreign currency reflects the persistent search for protection against macroeconomic volatility and the country's history of currency crises. At the same time, the current government is seeking to implement mechanisms such as the Fiscal Innocence Law to encourage some of those savings to enter the formal economy and provide liquidity to the domestic market.

Separately, as part of official efforts to attract capital, the foreign minister recently stressed the need to raise private investment, at a time when the indicator stands at 15.1% of gross domestic product against the 25% required, according to information published by the newspaper Clarín. Expansion projects in strategic sectors such as mining are also being evaluated through incentive regimes.

Going forward, the monitoring of economic policy will focus on whether official measures manage to reverse the trend toward hoarding and turn private savings into productive investment.
