Maracaibo records Venezuela's most expensive food basket amid sharp price disparities

The cost of the food basket for a family of five in Maracaibo reached 599 dollars in August 2026, a 7.39% increase in bolívares from the previous month, according to the web portal Descifrado, based on data from the Maracaibo Chamber of Commerce. This increase reflects the persistent inflationary pressure facing households across the country's regions.

Separately, the newspaper El Nacional reported that, according to measurements by the organization Cedice Libertad, national inflation in August 2026 stood at 6.99% in bolívares and 0.77% in dollars. These variations show that, despite relative exchange-rate stability, the prices of essential goods continue to rise steadily in both currencies.

The same El Nacional report highlights significant geographic disparities in price behavior. While Caracas recorded the largest monthly increase in bolívares, at 8.96%, Maracaibo emerged as the city with the most expensive basket in the country according to this study, reaching 980.32 dollars in the same period of August 2026.

The existence of two different figures for the cost of living in the same city (599 dollars according to the local business guild and 980.32 dollars according to the national organization) reflects differences in measurement methodologies, product selection and the size of the household sample used by each institution. Both sources agree, however, that the Zulia state capital leads in the cost of living and in cumulative inflation over the past twelve months.

This price escalation directly hits household consumption in the interior of the country, where commercial activity is constrained by the loss of consumer purchasing power and failures in public services, as the portal Bitácora Económica reported regarding the situation in Monagas state.
