Marco Rubio denies U.S. is blocking Machado's return

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday denied that Washington is obstructing the return of opposition leader María Corina Machado to Venezuela, according to the newspaper El Nacional. At a press conference with his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, the U.S. official said his department has never asked anyone to prevent a person from entering any place in the world.

The clarification from U.S. diplomacy comes at a moment of high political and logistical tension for the Venezuelan opposition. The return of a leading figure to national territory involves navigating transport restrictions and administrative measures imposed by the local government, which usually requires complex international coordination or the use of alternative air and sea routes.

According to complaints from the opposition leader's team reported by El Nacional last September, Machado has tried to return to Venezuela at least seven times (the last three from Panama) without success, owing to obstacles raised by Venezuelan authorities. For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump recently said that everything will turn out well when asked about support for the leader's return.

For Venezuelan citizens and political actors, the physical presence of opposition leaders in the country is a key factor in social organization and in advancing negotiation processes. As the portal El Estímulo analyzes, Machado's return generates strong expectations both among her supporters, who seek to revive popular mobilization, and among her political adversaries, who are weighing the impact her return would have on the domestic political landscape.

In the coming months, attention will focus on the progress of regional diplomatic efforts and on the real feasibility of the return routes. The outcome of this situation will shape the balance of power ahead of future electoral scenarios and the effectiveness of international support in the search for a political transition in the country.
