Mercosur accelerates its trade agreement agenda under pressure from Argentina

The South American bloc is moving toward an unprecedented phase of external opening, marked by the pursuit of trade pacts and bilateral negotiations that are altering the region's traditional dynamics, according to El Cronista, which reported on August 24, 2026.

The shift responds to the need to find predictability in a changing global environment in which the multilateral trading system faces serious operational limitations. Faced with this scenario, member countries are seeking alternatives through a trade offensive without recent precedent that includes talks with major powers and emerging economies.

According to information published by El Cronista, the bloc's exports currently account for less than 20% of combined gross domestic product, an indicator of low external trade integration that these initiatives seek to reverse through a network of new strategic agreements.

The efforts range from the recent launch of negotiations with Japan to advanced talks with Canada, Vietnam, India and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to the incorporation of partners into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and agreements with the European Free Trade Association.
