Meta committed up to $200 billion to AI without assurance of success

Meta Platforms Inc. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the company committed to invest up to $200 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure last year without any certainty that the products would work, according to Bloomberg Línea.

During his appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast, as reported by the outlet, the executive said the financial outlay went ahead despite internal warnings about the risk of a costly failure. The bet is part of the technology race the company is running against sector rivals to develop cutting-edge capabilities in data centers.

The strategy of heavy spending has raised concern among shareholders over its impact on corporate finances. In its latest quarterly report, the company recorded its lowest free cash flow in years after allocating resources to data centers and smart glasses, a result that preceded an 8% drop in the value of its shares, according to data published by Bloomberg Línea.

Alongside the disclosure of these remarks, the company unveiled a new artificial intelligence model and Muse, an assistant designed to automate everyday consumer tasks. The sustainability of this massive investment will be put to the test at the firm's next scheduled financial review.
