A non-governmental organization filed a complaint alleging possible corruption in the management of El Salvador's bitcoin reserves by the government, according to a report by the state-run channel Telesur on October 2, 2026.
The complaint's main argument centers on the lack of formal accountability mechanisms. According to the report, purchases of state-held crypto assets are announced informally through social media posts, without accounting reports that citizens can verify.
This lack of transparency comes at a time when the Central American country faces extremely costly access to financing in international markets. Opacity in public accounts tends to erode investor confidence, which raises the cost of the external credit needed to finance the state budget.
In everyday terms, more expensive public debt limits the state's room to allocate resources to essential services and social development programs, directly affecting the population that depends on public investment.
Going forward, the question is whether Salvadoran oversight institutions will open formal investigations, or whether the executive will implement official, auditable channels for recording crypto-asset transactions.
