Venezuelan groups press US embassies for overseas voting guarantees

Representatives of the Venezuelan diaspora delivered a formal statement on October 16, 2026, to US embassies and consulates in several countries in the region and Europe, according to the digital outlet Monitoreamos.

The initiative seeks to take to Washington demands to guarantee electoral participation for the millions of citizens living outside the country, calling for these demands to be incorporated into the dialogue agreements aimed at democratic reinstitutionalization.

The document, presented by more than 115 civil society organizations, outlines five priority areas for reform. Among them are the expansion of the consular network, the creation of a permanent and accessible Electoral Registry that accepts expired documents, and proportional infrastructure with sufficient polling centers abroad.

According to information disseminated by Monitoreamos, which compiled figures from the statement, some 7.8 million Venezuelans live outside the country and roughly five million are of voting age. However, only 69,211 were eligible to vote in the July 28, 2024, presidential election, equivalent to 1.4% of the adult population abroad, a limitation the signatories attribute to regulatory and administrative restrictions.

The international advocacy campaign will continue as the organizations expect US diplomacy to incorporate these proposals into discussions with domestic political actors.
