Trump urges Mexico to fight cartel-linked corruption and tighten customs controls

U.S. President Donald Trump urged the Mexican government to arrest and prosecute public officials who collaborate with drug cartels, according to Aristegui Noticias. In his annual determination on the main drug transit or production countries, published this Wednesday, the U.S. president said these criminal alliances endanger the security and sovereignty of both nations.

Although the document acknowledges and highlights the work of the administration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in seizing narcotics and dismantling clandestine laboratories, the White House is pressing for additional measures. Among Washington's demands, it stresses the need to encourage greater private-sector participation in securing supply chains and to significantly increase inspections at customs entry points.

Bilateral security cooperation has recently shown progress (such as the neutralization of major leaders of criminal organizations), but the U.S. government considers Mexico's current investment in its security forces insufficient to dismantle the financial networks of the cartels. In addition, the presidential determination left the list of drug transit countries unchanged and also named China as the main producer of chemical precursors used to manufacture fentanyl.

The demand for tighter controls at border customs posts poses a direct challenge to bilateral trade. Stricter inspections could translate into operational delays at land crossings, which would directly affect exporting companies and the value chains integrated across the North American region.
