White House confirms Trump and Delcy Rodríguez meeting Tuesday in New York
U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, in New York next Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, in New York next Tuesday. According to El Nacional, the White House confirmed that the bilateral meeting will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The meeting will close the U.S. president's official agenda during the UN High-Level Week.
The face-to-face meeting will be the first between a U.S. president and a Venezuelan head of state since April 2015, when Barack Obama and Nicolás Maduro spoke at the Summit of the Americas in Panama. Diplomatic relations between the two countries, broken since 2019, began a process of restoration after the capture and ouster of Maduro in January 2026, when Washington offered its support to the transitional government led by Rodríguez.
The political rapprochement has a strong economic backdrop. Recently, the two nations signed an energy agreement that gives the United States control over a fifth of Venezuela's crude oil reserves. The deal aims to revive the local oil industry and secure supply to the north, although it has drawn objections from political sectors that question whether commercial interests are being prioritized over a comprehensive democratic transition.
Going forward, the key questions are how the bilateral talks develop and whether this historic meeting leads to an easing of the remaining sanctions or to new foreign investment in Venezuela's energy sector.
