“I will talk to Delcy”: Trump on Venezuela elections

It is still too early to hold elections in Venezuela, although the electoral process will eventually take place, said U.S. President Donald Trump, according to the newspaper El Pitazo on Thursday, October 1.

The U.S. leader's remarks follow a bilateral meeting with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, on September 22 in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. That meeting was the first between the two leaders since the capture of Nicolás Maduro in a U.S. military operation on January 3.

In an interview with Time magazine, Trump described the electoral question as a very delicate issue at present, and said he would take up the matter directly with the interim president. The president also highlighted ongoing cooperation in the energy sector of the South American country.

The current oil agreement generates shared revenues while operations remain under U.S. control, the president said in the same interview, as reported by El Nacional and El Comercio Perú.
