Massive blackout leaves 600,000 households without power in Buenos Aires

A massive blackout affected some 600,000 households on Saturday night in the City of Buenos Aires and the northern area of Buenos Aires province, according to Diario La República. The outage interrupted electricity service for customers of the power distributors Edenor and Edesur.

According to the published information, the supply was interrupted for about four hours. The lack of electricity affected the operation of traffic lights, causing traffic incidents and disruptions to vehicle circulation in several neighborhoods during the day of September 21, 2026.

Edenor and Edesur are the largest electricity distributors in the country, with key concessions in the metropolitan area that concentrate a high density of population and industrial and commercial consumption. The service interruption once again puts the stability of the electricity distribution grid and the capacity of utilities to respond to operational failures under the spotlight.

Asked about the status of the supply and regulatory oversight, Argentina's Secretariat of Energy did not respond to requests for comment from the original news coverage.
