On October 15, 2026, Uruguay announced a projected investment of $5.7 billion for the installation of technology complexes and data centers, according to Infobae América. The megaproject, driven by the Spanish company Solaria, involves the development of digital infrastructure in the departments of Canelones, San José and Florida.
According to data published by El Observador, the initiative relies on a model based on the company's own solar energy and on collaboration with specialized technology partners. This type of facility requires a constant and large-volume electricity supply to operate the servers that process and store information on a large scale.
The Uruguayan government estimated that implementing the plan will generate thousands of jobs both during the construction phase and during the subsequent operation of the centers. Digital infrastructure and the energy transition are thus positioned as central pillars for attracting foreign capital to the Southern Cone.
Going forward, it will be necessary to monitor the progress of construction schedules and the conclusion of technology agreements that guarantee the electricity supply needed to sustain the operating capacity of the new complexes in Uruguayan territory.
