A total of 25 investment funds and some 40 international guests are taking part in the sixth edition of the Startup Venezuela Summit in Caracas, according to the outlet Descifrado. The event brings together key players in the technology ecosystem and seeks to serve as a bridge between local talent and international venture capital.
Venture capital (funds that finance high-potential startups in exchange for an equity stake) finds in contexts of severe economic distortion a field with little competition. This allows nimble investors to capture market share with lower initial requirements compared with developed markets such as the United States or Europe.
The summit, which runs from October 21 to 23, features British businessman Sir Richard Branson and gathers about 100 speakers. For the first time, the event includes a fund backed by institutional capital and multilateral organizations that is formally authorized to include Venezuela in its investment thesis.
This dynamism contrasts with the country's structural limitations, among which the deficiencies in electricity service stand out as particularly critical. While power cuts and outages affect the operations of virtually every commercial activity, the technology sector is trying to turn these operational deficits into business opportunities through decentralized infrastructure solutions.
Looking ahead, the local ecosystem is watching how the participation of multilateral capital and shorter closing times for financing rounds are helping to consolidate new avenues for productive development outside traditional sectors.
