Venezuela receives UNDP report to coordinate earthquake recovery

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday delivered to the Government of Venezuela a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report for the country's recovery after the earthquakes of June 24, according to the Banca y Negocios portal. The document was received by the acting president during an event broadcast on state television.

Michelle Muschett, UNDP's regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said that this first report is meant to serve as a key input for drafting an evidence-based framework for resilient recovery. The instrument aims to connect the priorities set by the national executive with the financing needs and governance mechanisms required to channel multilateral resources.

During her official visit to the country, the official reviewed with the authorities actions to strengthen cooperation within the Sustainable Development Goals. Following the earthquakes, the agency activated technological tools that allowed the executive to simulate scenarios and prioritize interventions to support implementation of the recovery plan, according to institutional information reported by the outlet.

For its part, the presidency said that it is working with the United Nations, the World Bank, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Union to consolidate a single plan that contains a realistic diagnosis of infrastructure and social assistance needs.

As next steps, the executive will begin a phase focused on formulating the resilient recovery framework, which will make it possible to turn technical findings into a strategic, operational and financial roadmap for reconstruction, according to the news sources.
