Venezuela logged 1,101 protests in September, according to OVCS

Venezuela recorded 1,101 demonstrations in September 2026, a 489% increase over the same period a year earlier, according to the news portal AlbertoNews, citing data from the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS).

Of the total protests documented, 83% were linked to Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (Desca). The crisis in the electricity supply consolidated itself as the main trigger for mobilizations due to prolonged blackouts, while the rest of the demands centered on labor and education issues, and on claims by relatives of political prisoners.

In parallel, the cost of the family food basket rose to $761.35 in September, an increase of 0.79% from the $755.36 reported in August, according to estimates published by the newspaper Descifrado, citing data from Cendas-FVM. This rise in prices occurs in an environment where the official exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Venezuela stood at 884.75 bolívares per dollar, an official benchmark that coexists with a parallel market that distorts citizens' real purchasing power.

Social unrest spread across the entire national territory, with the states of Lara, Anzoátegui, Carabobo, Portuguesa and Zulia leading the protest index. Rallies and street blockades remained the main forms of citizen pressure in the face of the deterioration of public services.
